One-year Multimodal Research Workshop
Overview
We are excited to announce a unique opportunity for Netherlands-based researchers interested in multi-modal research methodologies: a one-year multimodal research workshop. Through a concrete project, participants will work on the development, experimentation, production, and distribution of their multimodal research. Meeting three times in a year, the workshop will also bring ReCNTR researchers/mentors to discuss the specific stages of the life of the projects. The workshop aims to provide a space for participants to learn from each other about the knowledge and skills necessary for doing multimodal research, with a specific focus on media production destined for audiences in the social sciences and humanities.
Key Details:
- Duration: 3 x 2-day meetings over 1 year, starting in June 2025.
- Location: Leiden, Netherlands / Leuven, Belgium / Bologna, Italy
- Format: In-person meetings
- Cost: The program is offered free of charge. Partial funding of costs for travel and accommodation will be available.
Projects: 10 projects in total: 3-4 Leiden University projects (open to all participants from the Netherlands), 3-4 KU Leuven projects, 3-4 Bologna University projects.
Please note that this application form is only for the 3-4 projects which will be selected by Leiden University. Each participating university has its own separate selection process.
Program Highlights
- Development Phase: Participants will present project proposals, share and refine research questions, and create detailed project plans.
- Experimentation & Production Phase: Reflecting through practice on what it means to “experiment” with various multi-modal tools and techniques and how it can benefit their projects, as well as guidance on project design, execution, and production.
- Distribution Phase: Strategies for disseminating multi-modal projects to diverse audiences.
Eligibility
- Open to artists and post-graduate researchers with an interest in multi-modal methodologies at any stage (PhD, Junior and Senior researchers)
- Applicants must be able to attend all in-person meetings in person and commit to the full year program duration.
- Applicants must be prepared to cover their own travel and accommodation costs.
- Researchers from both Leiden University and other institutions are encouraged to apply.
Application Process
Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications, including:
- A CV
- A portfolio of previous multimodal work (if applicable)
- A brief project proposal (Max 2 pages) including: Research Question, Object of research, Methods and proposed format
- A brief statement explaining the relevance of multi-modal methodologies to your work, and any preliminary ideas for your project. (max 1 page)
Deadline: Applications must be submitted by 21 April 2025
Selection: A total of 3 projects will be selected for participation from Leiden University. Successful applicants will be notified by 6 May.
